Make a perfect gear in no more than 5 clicks and about 30 seconds in Illustrator using the alignment and pathfinder floaters.

Use the star tool to make a star (pure logic !).
Tip : hold shift while drawing your star to make it "snap" to a specific angle (0°, 45°,90°...).
Tip (2) : while holding the mouse button down (while drawing the star), use the up/down arrow keys (keyboard) to add/remove spokes to the star.
Use the ellipse tool to make a circle (hold shift to make it perfectly round) smaller than the star but crossing the spokes.
Now select both shapes and align them on the X and Y axes using the alignement floater.

With both shapes selected, click the "intersection" button on the Pathfinder floater. You're done :o)

Pathfinder - "intersection" is highlighted

Note that by varying the circle size in step 2, you modify the gear's tooth size
