Make a quick good-looking beveled text in just a few easy steps. You'll need to know basic layer manipulation to get through it easily.

  Create a new document (Ctrl+N) whatever size you need (here it's 150 x 62 @ 72dpi).
Using the type tool (T), type your text...
Create a new layer and get the text layer's selection (Ctrl+click on the text layer).
Now using the gradient tool, fill your selection (here it's from top to bottom). Hide your original text layer.

Create a new layer and get the previous layer's selection (Ctrl+click on the layer).
Go to Selection > Modify... > Contract with a 2 pixel contraction.
Now using the gradient tool, fill your selection but this time do it the other way around (bottom to top).
Deselect (Ctrl+D).

Using the arrow keys, move the layer up 2 pixels and left 1 pixel.
Basically, you're done.

In this last pic, I added noise to the 2 gradient layers and added a drop shadow set to "screen" (so it comes out on the black background).
