Here's a simple tutorial for making "plate segments" and a sort of rivet system all in one easy step (using layer effects).

First of all you'll need a background image. For the tutorial I'll use a basic texture

Make a new layer ("lines") on wich you'll draw lines and rivets. Use the markee tools, pencil or whatever to make the desired shapes.
I recommend drawing these in black for a sharp result and setting the layer to "multiply" and playing with opacity.

Now add a drop shadow (right click the layer and select layer effects - drop shadow should be automatically selected.)
Set blending mode to "color dodge" and color should be white.
Now use these settings :
- angle = 135
- offset = 1 pixel
- smoothing = 0 or 1 pixel

You're done :o)
What's great with this system is that you can add or delete doodads on the "lines" layer and the highlight will automatically update.

This tutorial was made for someone who asked me. please email me to give me your thoughts, ways of improving and to tell me how hard you found it so I can make a difficulty rating on future tutorials. thanx a bunch :o)
